“I feel the need… the need for speed!” Attending 15 schools in just 14 years across the United States and Canada, New York native Tom Cruise was 10 years old when he first took the stage in his elementary school’s drama festival. Finding comfort in the characters after experiencing so much transition and change throughout his childhood, Cruise struggled as a teen in deciding between his future on the stage and his love for the Catholic church. After briefly attending a Franciscan seminary in Ohio with the intention of becoming a Catholic priest, it wasn’t long before Cruise realized his true calling was far beyond the altar.
Making his way to Hollywood, Cruise made his silver screen debut in Endless Love in 1981 and followed up with minor roles in films like Taps and The Outsiders before making a name for himself in films like All the Right Moves and Risky Business. With obvious potential and impeccable charm, audiences latched on to the young actor as he skyrocketed to superstardom in the 1986 flick Top Gun. By 1988, he was well on his way to winning critics over after he appeared opposite Dustin Hoffman in Rain Main.
Over the years, Cruise has risen to greater and greater success as a top-billed actor in blockbusters like Jerry Maguire, Minority Report, Vanilla Sky and the Mission: Impossible series while taking home three Oscar nominations and three Golden Globe awards. Often ranked as Hollywood’s highest paid actor, he’s known for his widely publicized marriages (and divorces) to Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes as well as his youthful energy and outspoken advocacy for the Church of Scientology.
Despite the widespread criticism over his religious beliefs, one thing that few people argued with was the fact that Cruise seemed to be aging extremely well and naturally, for that matter. However, even that changed in early 2016 when The Last Samurai star arrived at the BAFTA Awards looking incredibly different. After years of fans seeing his face naturally untouched, it was quite a shock to see his face exceptionally swollen and smooth, which ignited a slew of jokes that he’d been stung by a swarm of bees. So, what happened?
The media went into a frenzy over Cruise’s new look with headlines like, “What has Tom Cruise done to his face?” and “Did Tom Cruise get bad plastic surgery?” Fans were quick to criticize and took to social media to slam the Jack Reacher star with tweets and posts like, “Oh dear Tom, what have you done to your face?” and “You know when you pump up your bike tires and you unintentionally overinflate them? Tom Cruise’s face tonight.” Others called it a tragedy suggesting that he “overdosed on Botox.”
Aside from jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch to profess his love for Katie Holmes, Cruise refrains from talking about his personal life and took the same approach to the plastic surgery rumors by refusing to address them. Dr. Anthony Youn, otherwise known as “America’s Holistic Plastic Surgeon,” said that Cruise has undoubtedly gone under the knife. “Tom could be swollen from a recent injection of a filler like Sculptra,” he said. “This treatment is typically used to fill gaunt faces, and it can cause facial swelling.”
With Cruise’s silence, many couldn’t help but wonder why he changed his mind after aging naturally for so long. One source close to the actor said that he was trying to attract a new crowd after his divorce from Holmes in 2012. “He really does want to settle down again,” the source said. “The fact of the matter is, he’s attracted to younger women, so he wants to look young.”
Beyond fans, the media and plastic surgeons commenting on his new look, some of Cruise’s colleagues chimed in as well. His Jerry Maguire co-star, Cuba Gooding, Jr., said that the rumors weren’t far off. When asked if he thought Cruise had undergone plastic surgery, he responded with, “Absolutely. I don’t know what Cruise has had done, but I remember I surprised him at his house one day and he had all of these dots all over his face.” When he asked if Cruise was all right, he said, “I didn’t know you were coming.” Although Gooding wasn’t certain what type of work Cruise was undergoing at the time, he was confident that it wasn’t only injections. Of course, in Gooding’s words, it’s truly “his own business.”
While Cruise has obviously had some work done with regular injections at the very least, it doesn’t appear that he’s gone overboard with an invasive procedure like a face or neck lift. Then again, we’ll likely never know the truth. After all, the 54-year-old keeps a tight lid on his private life especially since he’s sparked widespread controversies over his divorces and scientology beliefs that make getting a straight answer out of him a truly impossible mission.
