“Yo Adrian, I did it!” When you think of the biggest action hero in Hollywood of all time, most of us immediately think of Sylvester Stallone and rightly so. Launching his career over 40 years ago in 1970, Stallone is a true Hollywood legend who, ironically, had his first speaking role in an adult film. Taking the part after being evicted from his apartment and sleeping in a bus terminal for three weeks, Stallone’s luck eventually changed and his acting career took a better turn as he landed minor roles in films like No Place to Hide and The Prisoner of Second Avenue. In his spare time, he wrote screenplays with the hopes of one day seeing them on the silver screen.
In 1976, his dream finally came true when his screenplay, Rocky, was produced. Rather than taking a large sum of money for someone to purchase the script and cast the characters, Stallone insisted on playing Rocky himself and, with some hesitation, the producers finally agreed. As fate would have it, the film turned out to be a huge success with Stallone earning international fame, an Oscar nomination, five sequels and a spin-off titled Creed.
Amid his Rocky success over the years, the New York native has enjoyed his fair share of fortune and fame as well as failure. Apart from hit film series like Rambo and The Expendables—both of which he helped co-write and direct—he’s had a slew of unsuccessful films like Nighthawks, Demolition Man and Stop or My Mom Will Shoot that left critics referring to him as Hollywood’s biggest joke. Nevertheless, nothing has stopped the 70-year-old from enjoying his fame as one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood history with a $400 million net worth as well as his uncanny sex appeal.
Beyond falling in love with Stallone as an underdog in Rocky, one of the many reasons audiences went gaga over Stallone was partly due to one side of his face sagging that gave him a unique look and way of speaking that had never been seen before on the silver screen. As his popularity climbed, fans couldn’t help but wonder about the story behind Stallone’s looks and soon learned that his facial droop was the result of being removed by forceps from his mother’s womb at birth. The procedure didn’t go as planned and left extensive nerve damage on the left side of his face.
Despite his success, Stallone was extremely self-conscious of his appearance and requested that he only be photographed or filmed on the right side. After getting completely shredded and toned for films like Rocky and Rambo, the sagging became even more apparent and led him to supposedly make a change. In fact, many argue that the scar behind his left ear is proof that he had a facelift only on the left side of his face. Stallone, of course, had something else to say.
“People see this scar and think I’ve had a facelift. What they don’t notice is that I don’t have a scar over here by my right ear,” he said. “What do they think? That I could only afford to have half of it done?” When asked if he supported plastic surgery, his response was quick and generic with no denial or confirmation that he’d gone under the knife himself. “Sure. Why not do it?” he asked. “You have body work done on your car.”
In the years since, the rumor mill has gone into overdrive as tabloids claim that Stallone has turned to Botox injections and a possible forehead lift to keep his face looking fresh. Since it’s been years since Stallone has even mentioned plastic surgery, we’re only left to speculate. However, with his 95-year-old mother, Jackie, having extensive plastic surgery done herself, we can’t help but wonder if going under the knife runs in the family.
Today, Jackie admits that she’s overdone her plastic surgery especially now that she looks “like a chipmunk with a mouth full of walnuts.” However, she still believes in looking good. “I’m all for everything to make me look good—anything and everything,” she said. “But most of the plastic surgery in Beverly Hills is rotten.” As for confirming her son’s plastic surgery, Jackie remained tight-lipped about the action hero’s time under the knife.
Without any confirmation from the 70-year-old Rocky star (or his mother, for that matter), the rumors have blossomed over the years especially since it’s getting harder and harder to ignore the changes in his forehead, face and jawline. And, while we may never know the truth, it’s undeniable that the rumors haven’t harmed Stallone’s career in any way as he still has incredible star power in Hollywood and earned yet another Oscar nomination in 2015 for reprising the role of Rocky Balboa in Creed. He’s even set to star in the upcoming blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that have fans on the edge of their seats in anticipation!
