“If you’ve got a big mouth and you’re controversial, you’re going to get attention.” Either you have talent or you don’t and Simon Cowell will happily be the first to tell you either way. Years before he was known for his controversial comments, wisecracks and insults following his catchphrase, “I don’t mean to be rude, but…” Cowell worked his way up the ladder in the talent industry. Showing early signs of scouting talent despite his inability to get along with others, the young Brit enjoyed early success in the 1980s before finding fame in 2001 as a talent judge on the British series Pop Idol. Bringing the new show to the United States as American Idol, Cowell quickly earned a reputation for his brutal honesty that could melt a singing hopeful’s dreams in an instant.
In the years following the first season of Pop Idol, Cowell worked overtime to cash in on his fame and become one of the world’s renowned judges on shows like The X Factor (in both the United States and the United Kingdom) and America’s Got Talent. Refusing to stop there, he’s also proven his talents as a producer and is the mastermind behind series like American Inventor, Celebrity Duets and The You Generation, all of which has made him one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry on a global scale.
Surprisingly, after nearly four decades in the industry and over a dozen years in the spotlight, the 57-year-old Cowell looks younger today than he did when he joined American Idol in 2002, which has left many to wonder if the world’s harshest talent critic has turned to plastic surgery for help. While there is certainly no shortage of plastic surgery rumors, Cowell says there isn’t as much going as people think especially since he frequently shows signs of fatigue thanks to his hectic schedule. That’s why, instead of going under the knife, he turned to Botox injections to rejuvenate his face and ensure he’s always camera ready.
Like fellow America’s Got Talent judge Sharon Osbourne, Cowell hasn’t been shy about his Botox injections and says that he probably overdid them after Osbourne once told him that his face never actually moved. Admitting that he went overboard, Cowell ultimately decided to temporarily pull back on the Botox injections and let nature take its course. “Hopefully I look better now,” he remarked. “I probably did have a little too much Botox a couple of years ago because everyone on TV has it.”
Other than admitting that he opted for filler injections on his face a few times each year, Cowell denied any other plastic surgery rumors. He did, however, say that he has tried many different things to keep himself looking young. “Once in Los Angeles, years ago, I met this girl who would wrap me up in cling film and then tin foil, after covering me in oils,” he said. “It was meant to be detoxing.” He later admitted that he frequently detoxes at home and has tried everything from sleeping in tubes to covering himself in a sheep’s placenta. Yuck!
Despite Cowell’s honesty about his love of Botox and his denials of ever going under the knife, nothing has stopped the rumors about his appearance from running rampant. Lately, the rumors have gone to an entirely new level after he was spotted with a bandage behind his ear, which is usually a sure sign that someone has had a neck lift. Cowell denied the rumor himself and one source close to the entertainment mogul claimed, “Simon cut himself by accident. It’s not surgery.” Regardless, tabloids reported a noticeable change in Cowell’s pronounced jawline that has only added to widespread speculation and a new wave of rumors—go figure!
Like so many other celebrities, Cowell’s popularity hasn’t waned in the least because of the plastic surgery rumors or his obvious Botox addiction. But, that doesn’t mean he isn’t the center of criticism. In October 2016, Cowell returned to The X Factor and had the world instantly abuzz about his appearance. One person tweeted, “Simon’s face looks so plastic. Why can’t he grow old gracefully?” Another quipped, “WTF is going on with Simon’s face? It looks like he’s got a bull clip on the back of his head pulling his face tight.”
It’s incredibly obvious that Cowell is desperately trying to turn back the clock with plastic surgery but we likely won’t know the whole truth behind his million-dollar smirk until he’s ready to share. Once describing his Botox regimen like regularly “having your teeth whitened,” his tune has recently changed. “Now I have facials, but nothing too extravagant at the moment.” Although some speculate that he’s had much more done and perhaps a complete dental overhaul, if anyone can handle the criticism, he certainly can. After all, if he can dish it out, he can take it.
