“If I could turn back time, if I could find a way I’d take back those words that hurt you…” Long before she was known around the world as the Goddess of Pop, Cher was just another little girl struggling to fit in as she and her mother moved around the country before finally settling in Encino, California. Amid trouble fitting in at school as Cherilyn Sarkisian, Cher decided early on that she wanted to be famous more than anything else. “I couldn’t think of anything that I could do,” she said. “I didn’t think I’d be a singer or dancer. I just thought, well, I’ll be famous. That was my goal.”
Managing to do exactly that, Cher’s striking beauty and personality made her a standout among her classmates but, not even her sudden popularity could keep her in Encino for long. At 16 years old, she dropped out of high school and moved to Los Angeles where she took acting classes and danced in clubs on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip to support herself, meet people and land auditions. Along the way, she met Sonny Bono who, after hiring her as his housekeeper, knew her iconic voice and stunning beauty would make her a star. Before long, the folk-rock duo took the stage belting out hits like “I Got You Babe” on their Sonny & Cher variety show.
In the midst of her early success alongside Sonny, Cher launched her solo career and found even more stardom with chart-topping hits like “If I Could Turn Back Time” and “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves.” But, in true Cher fashion, she didn’t stop there as she made her way to the silver screen where she established herself as an accomplished actress with memorable roles in films like Mask, Burlesque and Moonstruck, which earned her an Academy Award.
Continuing to reinvent herself and her career over the last 50 years, Cher has proven that she only gets better with time after selling 100 million records worldwide, enjoying a successful residency in Las Vegas and earning dozens of honors including a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, an Academy Award and three Golden Globes. She’s also amassed a jaw-dropping $305 million net worth which, as you might have guessed, a large portion of has gone to maintaining her signature look with a long list of plastic surgeries including a nose job and a breast augmentation.
Opting for her first procedure after seeing herself in Moonstruck and knowing she could look better, Cher denies having her cheekbones enhanced but is proud of her breast enhancements especially after becoming a mother in 1969. “I’ve had my cheekbones since I was small [but my breasts] got so much bigger after Chastity was born, I couldn’t bear to see them deflate.” Later admitting that a few of her procedures have gone terribly wrong, Cher said, “My breast operations were a nightmare. They were really botched in every way.”
Today, the 70-year-old is still going strong with plans in the works for a Broadway musical about her life but don’t expect the wrinkle-less Cher to dish all the details of her time under the knife. Earlier this year, the “Dark Lady” crooner posted a photo with her mother (who is now in her 90s), which ignited widespread rumors that Cher has gone to even greater extremes by having a rib removed to make her waist smaller. Many argue that she’s even opted for eyelid surgery, enhanced her teeth and tightened her skin beyond simple Botox, a favorite among Hollywood stars.
In 2010, Cher was actually caught red-handed on the red carpet at a movie premiere when she was spotted with sticky tape pulling up her jawline, a trick that’s been used by just about everyone in Hollywood over the age of 30. When confronted about the tape and her obvious battle with aging, the Goddess of Pop didn’t mince her words. “It’s a b****. I don’t like it. Anyone who says they do is lying, or they don’t have my work.”
No longer getting as many job offers in Hollywood as she once did in the 1980s, Cher says it’s because she either looks too young or too old for most of the parts. “It doesn’t feel very good, but it’s true,” she said. “I just thought, I’m going to look like I am.” That mantra definitely seems to be working for her as her look and sound are still unique enough to keep fans interested and flocking to sold-out arenas just to see her perform. Whatever the case, she’s finally comfortable in her own skin even if it cost her around $25,000 to get there. And, as she likes to say, “It makes me happy. You know, if I want to put my t*** on my back, they’re mine.” She certainly has a point!
