Famous For 1976 Olympic Gold-Medal Decathlete and Keeping Up with the Kardashians
“You don’t go out and change your gender for a television show.” Turning heads in the small town of Lamoni, Iowa for his talent on the football field at Graceland University, Bruce Jenner’s football career was tragically cut short when a knee injury put him on the bench. After quitting football, the University’s track coach approached Jenner and persuaded him to join the team. The New York native ended up excelling in the sport and proved his incredible decathlon talent by dominating in 10 athletic events that took him straight to the 1972 U.S. Olympic trials in Oregon.
Ultimately losing his spot on the team, Jenner was determined to make the 1976 Olympics and spent the next four years training for the event, rain or shine. With 13 decathlons and only one loss over the next three years, his fate was sealed at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal as Jenner achieved five personal bests on the first day alone. Winning a gold medal and setting a world record with his impressive score, Jenner was an overnight sensation whose first and last Olympic Games would go down in history.
With his incredible success on the Olympic track, Jenner was suddenly everywhere from Wheaties boxes to magazine covers and television shows. However, by the 1980s, he slowly disappeared from the spotlight only to make a grand return in 1991 after tying the knot for a third time, this time with Kardashian matriarch, Kris Houghton. Shortly after, Jenner became a dad for the fifth and sixth time with the birth of Kendall and Kylie Jenner as he navigated the realm of being a step-father to Kris’s children Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Robert.
Finding himself back in the spotlight alongside his family in the new millennium on the reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Jenner truly shocked the world in 2015 when he came out as a trans woman and confirmed he spent his entire life living with the wrong identity. Despite Kris’s early support, Jenner’s confession ultimately destroyed their marriage as Jenner began his transformation to Caitlyn with plastic surgery and hormone regimens in what became the most talked about story of 2015. Suddenly, Jenner was everywhere once again only this time as Caitlyn.
Now praised for her courage as a pioneer for transgendered people around the world, Jenner’s rekindled popularity earned her the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPY Awards and even landed her a reality television show of her own called I Am Cait. With her appearance obviously altered from her former days as Bruce, Jenner refused to undergo sexual reassignment surgery and has, instead, opted to go under the knife numerous times over the last year and a half to create a more feminine look.
At 65 years old, the former Playgirl cover model opted for a 10-hour plastic surgery known as a “feminization surgery” performed by Dr. Harrison Lee who told the media, “Men tend to have a prominent brow bone, so you do a little bit of a brow lift… We also go inside the mouth and actually take off the outer portion of the jaw bone and soften it.” Not only did Jenner’s face appear much more feminine with softer lines after the surgery, the rest of her body has changed as well.
Jenner also opted for breast implants during an eight-hour procedure that physicians believed would take her longer to recover from due to her age. However, Jenner once again proved the world wrong as her physique and incredible health ensured a quick recovery and landed her on the cover of magazines like Variety and Vanity Fair. But, the surgery rumors still weren’t over as Jenner continued to go under the knife to perfect her knew look.
Learning to navigate the world of plastic surgery from her 23-year marriage with Kris, a self-described plastic surgery queen, Jenner continued having regular Botox injections, skin tightening procedures and a second brow lift. Today, it’s estimated that the 67-year-old Olympian has undergone nearly a dozen surgeries including a hairline readjustment and even toe and fingernail surgeries with the cost estimated at six figures and climbing!
And, although the world is now accustomed to calling her “Cait,” it doesn’t mean the rumors have stopped regarding Jenner’s next procedure, a likely tracheal shave that would remove her Adam’s Apple. There’s even widespread speculation that Jenner might not be fully content with her new look and lifestyle thanks to her hesitancy to have sex reassignment surgery, which would cement her decision. According to the I Am Cait star, being a woman is simply more of a mental state and a lifestyle. Either way, the onslaught of publicity has certainly been good for Jenner’s reputation after spending so much time in the shadows behind Kris, Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Kendall and Kylie for all those years.
