“Women need a reason to have sex. Men just need a place.” A New Yorker through and through, Billy Crystal’s passion for acting blossomed in the late 1960s when he studied film and television directing at New York University under instructors like Martin Scorsese. After graduating in 1970, Crystal formed a comedy trio with a couple of friends while he worked as a substitute teacher before setting out on his own and hiring an agent who helped him land an appearance on All in the Family. Soon after, he was cast as Jodie Dallas on Soap from 1977 to 1981 and, by 1984, was a household name in Hollywood as a main cast member of Saturday Night Live.
Thanks to his success on Saturday Night Live, Crystal seamlessly transitioned to the silver screen where he quickly won the hearts of audiences in romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally…, buddy comedies like City Slickers and mobster comedies like Analyze This. After proving his talent in front of the cameras and as a voice actor in the Monsters, Inc. franchise, he made his alma mater even prouder when he stepped behind the camera to direct films like 61* and Forget Paris. Along the way, he also showed a knack for hosting as a nine-time Academy Awards host from 1990 to 2012, which only further sealed his fate as one of the greatest comedic talents of all time.
Despite his impressive knack for comedy, however, Crystal has never been considered a heartthrob by Hollywood standards and has always felt the pressure to fit the part of what it means to be an A-lister in Tinsel Town. Add in the fact that the Academy Awards put him front and center among his celebrity friends and it’s no surprise why Crystal eventually turned to plastic surgery to touch up his look, whether he admits it or not!
During the height of his hosting gig with the Academy Awards in the new millennium, Crystal started to show early signs of aging with wrinkles coming in around his eyes, across his forehead and around his mouth. However, in the past five years, the wrinkles the media once made a huge fuss about have seemingly vanished as his cheeks are now puffier than they were at the turn of the millennium. So, has he gone under the knife, opted for injections or both? Starting with his eyes, experts assume that Crystal opted for a blepharoplasty to remove the wrinkles around his eyes, especially the crow’s feet and his drooping eyelids.
As for his cheeks, the new puffiness suggests that Crystal may have jumped on the Hollywood bandwagon and opted for two of the town’s favorite and most common procedures—Botox or Juvederm injections. Aside from his eyes and cheeks, Crystal also developed quite a bit of a “turkey neck,” which is loose skin around the chin and neck area that creates a double, sagging chin. While some fans assume that Crystal’s recent affinity for a scruffy beard over his typical clean-shaven face is his attempt to hide his gobble neck, others assume that he’s gone under the knife to tighten the loose skin and is using his facial hair to hide the scars. With Crystal pleading the fifth and refusing to give anyone the scoop, we may never know the truth!
Crystal hasn’t met a lot of criticism thanks to only subtle changes to his appearance but, with his sense of humor, he is more than capable of handling any harsh words or negativity thrown his way. A few tabloids tested Crystal’s patience and self-confidence with headlines that asked questions like, “What happened to Billy Crystal’s face?” Others suggest that the Monsters, Inc. star has gone “too far” with plastic surgery saying, “Time and plastic surgery have not been kind” to Crystal and his When Harry Met Sally… co-star, Meg Ryan. Now that must’ve stung a little!
Renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn didn’t treat Crystal himself (nor does he know who did) but that didn’t stop him from weighing in. “I suspect [Crystal] has had a little help from a plastic surgeon, specifically with laser skin tightening treatments,” Dr. Youn remarked. “Billy may have undergone some injections of a filler like Restylane to smooth out some lines as well.” Either way, the surgeon doesn’t expect the actor to come forward about his procedures anytime soon and, sadly, we don’t either.
Although the 68-year-old writer, producer, comedian and director might not be ready to admit that he’s gone under the knife, it hasn’t stopped his fans from tuning in to see his latest work. Most recently, Crystal starred alongside Josh Gad on FX’s comedy series The Comedians and is set to return to the silver screen in the 2017 film Untogether. In the meantime, he’s still holding onto his coveted Hollywood status despite a few rumored nips and tucks.
