“Always remember to love the woman in the mirror. There’s nothing like being comfortable in your own skin.” The daughter of an opera singer and oil company executive, Salma Hayek was born on September 2, 1966 in Veracruz, Mexico. She got her start as an actress in her 20s when she landed the leading role in Teresa, a 1989 Mexican telenovela that made her a household name in her native country. By the early 1990s, she made her way to Los Angeles, California and studied acting under Stella Adler. As she perfected her English, more and more roles became available as she starred opposite Antonio Banderas in Desperado followed by From Dusk Till Dawn, Fools Rush In, Wild Wild West, and Dogma. Hayek established her own production company known as Ventanarosa in the new millennium and finally found staying power in 2002 when she earned an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance in Frida. In the years since, she’s guest-starred on Ugly Betty and 30 Rock, and snagged credits in popular flicks like Grown Ups, Puss in Boots, Grown Ups 2, Tale of Tales, and The Hitman’s Bodyguard.

On top of her incredible success, Hayek is often praised as one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood and has been a spokeswoman for high profile brands like Avon, Revlon, and Cartier. She’s also co-founded the Juice Generation juice-delivery Cooler Cleanse program and, in 2011, launched her own line of skincare, haircare, and cosmetics known as Nuance. So, what are her biggest beauty secrets both on and off the red carpet? Let’s find out!

SKINCARE

Nuance Cucumber & Rosewater Dual Phase Makeup Remover ($9) Nuance Chamomile Facial Cream Cleanser ($8)
Nuance Wild Lime Exfoliating Facial Gel ($8) Nuance AM/PM Anti-Aging Super Cream ($20)
Nuance Nourish & Renew Glow Facial Oil ($22) Biologique Recherche Grand Millesime Serum ($74)
Anne Semonin Serum Precieux ($140)

Taking a cue from her grandmother who used natural products like oatmeal, papaya, and honey to hydrate and cleanse her skin, Hayek keeps her own routine and Nuance product line incredibly simple with nourishing and natural ingredients. “I never cleanse my skin in the morning. My grandmother taught me that at night your skin replenishes all the things you lost during the day. Also, if I cleanse very well at night, why would it be dirty when I wake up,” she told Allure. “At night, I take off my makeup with coconut oil. Then, I use rose water to take off the residuals. You can use a hot towel with the rose water—you put a wet towel in the microwave—to do a little steam.”

While Hayek loves products like the Biologique Recherche Grand Millesime Serum ($74) and the Anne Semonin Serum Precieux ($140), she often dips into her own products for her regular routine. Some of her favorites from the Nuance line include the Cucumber & Rosewater Dual Phase Makeup Remover ($9) and the Chamomile Facial Cream Cleanser ($8). She keeps exfoliating to a minimum and uses the Wild Lime Exfoliating Facial Gel ($8) followed by a mixture of serums or oils depending on her skin that day. Most days she uses the Nuance AM/PM Anti-Aging Super Cream ($20) for hydration and the Nuance Nourish & Renew Glow Facial Oil ($22).

For those evenings when she has extra time to relax, she likes to blend an edible Watermelon Hibiscus Mask from her new line with Juice Generation. On other occasions, she’s been known to blend oatmeal, almond milk, and honey. “You let it soak, and it’s a great cleanser that makes your skin very soft,” she says.

FOUNDATION, BRONZER & BLUSH

Nuance Blur Perfection Primer in Translucent Matte ($13) Nuance Flawless Finish Naturally Luminous Concealer ($11)
Nuance Flawless Finish Velvety Smooth Pressed Powder ($12) Nuance Flawless Finish Liquid Foundation ($15)

Kevyn Aucoin The Neo-Blush ($38) Kevyn Aucoin The Creamy Glow Duo ($28)

Hayek believes that less is more especially when it comes to her daily makeup routine. She usually applies a touch of foundation and gives dual purpose to her lipstick and uses it as blush. So, what are her favorite products?

To create a flawless finish, Hayek turns to her Nuance line and loves the Nuance Blur Perfection Primer in Translucent Matte ($13) to create a healthy, flawless canvas. She then applies the Flawless Finish Naturally Luminous Concealer ($11) followed by the Flawless Finish Liquid Foundation ($15), which she blends using a Beauty Blender sponge ($20). To set the liquid foundation, she applies the Flawless Finish Velvety Smooth Pressed Powder ($12) and contours using the Flawless Finish Contour & Illuminate Duo ($13). For a pop of color and added contour when she isn’t using her lipstick to do double duty, she uses the Nuance Flawless Finish Illuminating Blush & Bronzer Duo ($13). For special outings or events, she relies on Kevyn Aucoin for blush and loves The Neo Blush ($38) and The Creamy Glow Duo ($28).

For her eyes, she typically keeps things smoky and neutral and uses shades from the Nuance Endless Eye Effects Shadow Collection ($14) in Neutral Expressions and Smoke Signals. She also likes the Long Lasting Shadow Stick ($12) in both Shimmered Bark and Charcoal as well as Glossier’s Lidstar Glistening Eye Glow ($18), which gives a nice shimmer to her otherwise dark and sultry eyes.

Once her shadow is complete, Hayek uses the Nuance Long Lasting Eyeliner Pencil in Volcanic Black ($10) or the Long Lasting Precision Eye Marker in Black Ink ($10) to line her eyes close to the lash line. She smudges the liner with her finger and then applies multiple coats of the Nuance Long & Lush Volumizing Mascara in Deep Black ($10) to plump her lashes for an even more dramatic look.

“Beauty is something every woman is born with and spends a lifetime cultivating.” Honored as Glamour magazine’s “Woman of the Year” in 2001, the 51-year-old Hayek is an outspoken advocate for women on everything from beauty and skincare to breastfeeding and equality. “I am a feminist because a lot of amazing women have made me who I am today,” she said. “But, it should not be just because I am a woman.” For Hayek, being a woman is a gift she embraces as she ages gracefully in the spotlight and reveals more of her laid-back approach to life. “People often say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves.” It sounds like the award-winning and talented Hayek is truly beautiful on the inside and out!
