“If I were a boy, I think I could understand how it feels to love a girl. I swear I’d be a better man. I’d listen to her ‘cause I know how it hurts when you lose the one you wanted ‘cause he’s taken you for granted and everything you had got destroyed…” Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter broke onto the music scene in the late 1990s as the lead singer of the R&B group Destiny’s Child and hasn’t looked back since as the girl group became one of the best-selling in history and led to Beyoncé’s solo success. Amid the group’s growing stardom, Beyoncé extended her reach into acting and appeared in Austin Powers in Goldmember and Dangerously in Love before the group broke up in 2006 and she launched her second solo album, B’Day. Adding in credits in The Pink Panther, Dream Girls, and Obsessed, she tied the knot with rapper Jay-Z in 2008 and earned her reputation as the Queen Bee with the introduction of her alter ego, Sasha Fierce. In the decade since then, she’s the most nominated woman in Grammy history with 22 Grammy Award wins and dozens of Billboard hit singles like “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” and “If I Were a Boy.” Thanks to her position in the industry, she’s also become one of the highest paid black musicians in history as well as the most powerful female in the entertainment world. It comes as no surprise then why so many fans turn to her for fashion and beauty tips and tricks! What’s her makeup routine? We thought you’d never ask!

When she’s preparing for a big event, she’ll spend half an hour relaxing with the REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask ($55) to further moisturize her skin. Other times, she likes to use Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir ($18). For daily moisture, she prefers a quick scrub with Carol’s Daughter Ocean Sea Salt Scrub ($20) followed by the L’Oreal Paris Bright Reveal Brightening Day Moisturizer ($20). For her lips, she applies Smith’s Rosebud Salve ($6) before applying any lipstick or stain.

Beyoncé usually handles her makeup before a big concert as a way to get into the mood for a big show. “It’s a way of getting into the zone—it’s part of becoming Sasha Fierce,” she says. “I’m able to sit down for an hour and play around with makeup, which I find really relaxing and fun. Before a tour, I have my makeup artist design a look for me—she draws it on paper to show me where to put everything.”

Today, Beyoncé relies on Sir John to ensure she has a flawless finish and he never disappoints since he knows her love of natural beauty and fresh skin! “I know she has a formula,” Sir John says of his technique. “She just loves beautiful skin and natural beauty so if I know she loves that, I’m going to nail that and everything else is going to be the icing on the cake.” Everything else is truly icing on the cake as Sir John starts with MAC Prep + Prime Fix + ($26) to prime Beyoncé’s face and create a healthy canvas for her foundation. Once the primer sets, he applies a layer of Glossier Skin Tint ($26) and then touches up areas that require additional coverage with the L’Oreal Paris Infallible Total Cover Concealing & Contour Kit ($17).

For highlighting and contour, Sir John uses L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion ($15) and the L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Shimmerista Highlighting Powder ($15). Depending on the event and environment, he sometimes uses higher-end products like the Danessa Myricks Enlight Illuminator in Heaven Sent ($20) or the Tom Ford Bronzing Powder ($68). To add color to her cheeks, he brushes on Glossier Cloud Paint Blush in Beam ($18) or uses the Maybelline Master Glaze Blush Stick in Coral Sheen ($10) before adding another layer of highlighter to create added dimension. He completes the look by setting the entire foundation with another coat of MAC Prep + Prime Fix + ($26).

Beyoncé highlights the rest of her body to create a velvety sheen by layering a variety of bronzers like L’Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze One Day Gel ($10). She also likes to use the Scott Barnes Body Bling ($30) for added moisture and sheen.

To frame Beyoncé’s face, Sir John uses Glossier Boy Brow ($16) to define her lashes and suggests an alternative like Milani Cosmetics Easy Brow Tinted Fiber Gel ($7) for those just entering the brow game. For her eyes, he loves to create a smoky and glamourous look and starts by using a full-coverage spackle like Lemonhead Houdini Highlite Spacepaste ($22) or Dirty Penny Spacepaste ($22), both of which are ideal for everything from red carpet photoshoots to long hours on the stage. For added color and depth, he brushes on Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow in Space Cowboy ($21) and then outlines her top lash line with L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Feline Liner Noir ($10) to create the perfect cat eye. He uses the YSL Beauty Eye Duo Smoker ($30) on her lower waterline and, after applying false lashes with dark or clear adhesive to build an even more dramatic look, finishes by applying multiple coats of L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise ($10) or Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara ($20).

LIPS

L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Matte Lip Liner in Strike a Matte-ch ($9) Yves Saint Laurent Beauty Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain ($36)
L’Oreal Paris Pure-Sugar Scrubs ($13)

Sir John is notorious for mixing lipsticks to create the perfect shade for Beyoncé’s latest look whether she’s at the Grammy Awards, the Oscars, or Coachella. But, regardless of what color he’s going for, he always starts with a sugar scrub to prep Beyoncé’s lips. “One trick for helping your lip color last is to use a sugar scrub first,” he says. Often using L’Oreal Paris Pure-Sugar Scrubs ($13), he then blends colors like L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Matte Lip Liner in Strick a Matte-ch ($9) and Yves Saint Laurent Beauty Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain ($36). “These liquid lipsticks have had a place in my kit forever,” he told Allure magazine. “I am obsessed because the formula really lasts, and I also love the shade range. And I mean it, it literally doesn’t move, so you can apply it straight from the tube and you’re good to go for the day.”

OVERALL LOOK

“I have many beauty icons. I really appreciate Audrey Hepburn, and of course, Marilyn Monroe. I like risk takers like Cher and Diana Ross. I like people that find what looks really good on them. I think that’s the most important tip.” Admitting that she has a few beauty tricks that she would love to try, Beyoncé tries to avoid makeup disasters and sticks to what she knows looks good on her. That’s exactly why she has such a classic beauty and is in good company with her beauty icons. “There are things that I love that I know won’t work for me—these women found the perfect silhouette for their bodies, the perfect cut of suits and dresses, the perfect hairstyle. Their choices made them more beautiful rather than distracting from their beauty.”

Determined to use her own features to the best of her ability while empowering other women to do the same, the 36-year-old Beyoncé is truly an icon in everything she touches from music and acting to fashion and beauty. “My biggest thing is to teach not focus on the aesthetic,” she says. “It really is about who you are and the human being that makes you beautiful. And the more you mature, you realize that your imperfections make you more beautiful.”
