One of the most bankable actors in the history of Hollywood, Johnny Depp has held some of the more memorable roles of the past few decades. Between films such as “Edward Scissorhands”, “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Alice in Wonderland”, we’ve seen Depp play a wide range of characters that latched on with audiences.
Among the first things that come to mind with Johnny Depp is how often he’s paired up with director Tim Burton, but he’s also been known for being ahead of the curve in terms of fashion. Among his more ambitious fashion choices are his glasses, which we’ve seen him wear for many years now. The star that’s brought in billions at the box office has some high-end glasses, too, which we’ll take a closer look at.
You might think of Depp wearing eyeglasses only when the cameras aren’t rolling, but he’s actually been bespectacled in a lot of his films. Movies such as “Nick of Time”, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “Secret Window” all feature Depp wearing different kinds of eyewear. He’s worn so many different pairs of glasses throughout his career that it’s hard to say that there’s just one type of look for the actor, but he seems to pull off the look no matter what it is.
Depp is seen as a style icon when it comes to his glasses, especially when it comes to the round types of glasses that he wears. It’s not an easy look to pull off, as round glasses are usually only recommended for those with sharp jawlines and defined features. Then again, you can say that those are defining qualities that they look for in potential movie stars, so it does make sense that someone like Depp can wear round glasses.
One particular brand that Depp feels an affinity toward is Moscot. If you’re not familiar, this eyewear company has been around since 1915, with only six locations worldwide. Moscot is one of the oldest eyewear companies that’s still in operation, and Depp has worn their glasses both in his films and away from the public eye. It was “Secret Window” in particular where Moscot teamed up with Depp to give him glasses for the film.
The type of round glasses that Moscot makes might be considered as a bit of a “hipster” look by some, but it’s a look that’s worked tremendously for Depp. Of course, to achieve the “true hipster” look, according to some, you have to spend some big money. Moscot frames are certainly not cheap, and the ones that Depp wears, the Lemtosh, start at $370 and only go up from there.
Some of the lower cost Moscot frames sit around the $130 mark, if you’re looking for something a little more affordable. Most frames, though, will be around the $260 price point. High fashion can come at a high price, and for some it’s worth the cost. Especially when you have a reputation as a style icon that needs to keep up appearances at almost all times.
Many have noticed that in the past decade or so, Depp has switched over to tinted lenses on his sunglasses. People that were curious about this finally got the truth in 2013 when Depp revealed that he is ‘basically blind as a bat” in the left eye. Depp said that it’s been a problem since birth, and that “Everything is just very, very blurry. I’ve never had proper vision.” This has made things a bit difficult for Depp in roles where he isn’t wearing glasses, as he said that he can only see a few inches in front of his face.
Because of this, Depp hasn’t seen any of his movies that were filmed in 3-D as his eyes can’t process the three dimensions. “I always find it difficult to watch myself and my excuse this time is that I actually can’t,” he said upon the release of a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie that was filmed in 3-D. “I’m unable to see in 3-D. I can’t, my eyes don’t see in 3-D, I have a weird eye.”
Depp also added that “It just doesn’t work. I’ve never – might come as a surprise to you – but, I’ve never seen anything normally. As normal people, you know, cause one of my eyes doesn’t see very much.”
It was a bit revealing to find out why Johnny Depp became such a style icon with his choice of eyeglasses and how it was a complete accident. Some people will wear eyeglass frames without the lenses (or prescription lenses) just for the style itself, but you’ll find some very strong lenses in Depp’s glasses. One of the few people that’s been named “World’s Sexiest Man” on multiple occasions hasn’t let vision problems get in the way of his career and his style, and most of us associate him with wearing glasses more than seeing him without them.
